Charles E. Barber created the Liberty Nickel, which was produced from 1883 until 1912. The Liberty Nickel is the only denomination Charles Barber offered a distinctive design to out of all the Barber coinage. The Philadelphia Mint struck this first-year-of-issue Liberty Nickel in 1883, and it has been rated in Mint State 65 condition. Early in 1833, the back of the coin merely had a “V” to indicate that it was worth five cents. By the end of 1883, the term “CENTS” had been added to avoid confusion. Significantly fewer than 1% of all 1883 Liberty Nickels have been graded in Mint State 65 condition, making this magnificent specimen a Condition Rare.
