Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a renowned sculptor, first collaborated with the US Mint to create commemorative medals. He is best known today for his Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle and Indian Head Eagle designs. To mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to the Americas, the World’s Columbian Exposition was staged in 1893. The Treasury Secretary and Mint Director rejected Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ initial design for this medal’s back. The reverse was created by Mint Engraver Charles Barber, and the US Mint utilized Saint-Gaudens’ obverse. This World’s Columbian Exposition medal from 1892–1893 is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and was made of bronze.
