Thomas Jefferson ordered the “To Peace and Trade” medal in 1792 with the intention of giving it to French diplomats as a present. In 1792, only two gold examples were produced, and they were sent to the United States with the French Foreign Ministers. Charles E. Barber used the original lead design to engrave new dies in 1876 to commemorate the American Centennial. The “To Peace and Trade” 1/4oz Gold Coin was produced by the Paris Mint in France using Barber’s dies to commemorate 230 years after the medal was first produced. Thomas Jefferson contributed to the design, which has a distinctive element for coinage.
