1938 saw the introduction of the Felix Schlag-designed Jefferson Nickel. Thomas Jefferson was only the third president to be portrayed on circulation coinage and was honored on the five-cent piece for almost a century. The San Francisco Mint produced this particular Proof Jefferson Nickel in 1989, and it has been rated in nearly-perfect Proof 69 Deep Cameo condition. Much fewer than 1% of Proof 1989-S Jefferson Nickels have been graded in Proof 69 DCAM condition.
